13 most dangerous airports in the world

Imagine how much they admired the skill of pilots who were able to land a plane on an icy strip or, say, at an airport in mountain tops, at an altitude of several thousand meters above sea level. It turns out that these are not only tricks that can be seen in Hollywood movies - this is also happening in the real world ...

13 самых опасных аэропортов мира

British travel company Globehunters compiled a list of airports in the world with the most dangerous runways (runways), which included 13 air harbors. Tourweek.ru will tell you what the pilots working in these places have.

LUKLA TENZING-HILLARY (NEPAL)

Nepalese airport Lukla is named after climbers Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, who are known for the first ever ascent of Mount Everest. The air harbor is one of the most dangerous in the world: the runway is inclined by 12% and has a length of only 527 meters. Due to the slope, the aircraft can quickly brake and fly in such a short section.

LUKLA TENZING-HILLARY (НЕПАЛ)

Lukla is located high in the mountains, at an altitude of 2860 meters above sea level. The runway is surrounded on one side by a rock, on the other - by a 700-meter cliff. In addition, when approaching a landing, airliners have to fly into a narrow mountain gorge, where it is difficult to maneuver. For this reason, the landing of aircraft in the air harbor is carried out only manually, according to the "Rules of visual flights". The only radar equipment that is in Lukla is a radio station.

Because of weather conditions, planes arrive and depart from the airport, mostly in the morning, until a haze appeared. Aircraft fly from Lukla "flocks" - one after another. Local passengers are entirely dependent on weather conditions: if they are unfavorable, the flight can wait several hours, or even several days.

PARO AIRPORT (BUTAN)

Bhutan Paro airport is considered no less dangerous. The air harbor is in the Himalayas, at an altitude of about 3 thousand meters above sea level. Takeoff and landing at the airport - a serious test for the pilots.

Until 2011, only one airline operated flights to the airport. To date, only 12 pilots around the world have been trained to fly to Paro. Four of the pilots are Greeks, who have many complex island air harbors at home, so they have the necessary skills and experience in such conditions. These pilots are preparing other specialists for flights to Paro.

Flights to the airport are carried out only in the daytime and strictly in certain weather conditions. Every year in Paro arrive 30 thousand brave passengers.

BARRA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (BARRA Island, SCOTLAND)

Barra's air harbor is located on the eponymous island, which is part of the Outer Hebrides (Western Isles). The uniqueness of the airport is that it has the only sandy runway in the world. Barra works only during low tides.

Flights from the airport are carried out during the day, but in emergency situations, aircraft can land here and at night - in this case, the strip is highlighted with car headlights, laying along the shore special reflective tape.

In Barra are three runways, the average length of which is 800 meters. The island airport annually serves about 1,5 thousand flights, through it pass about 10 thousand passengers a year.

ICE RUNWAY (ANTARCTIC)

If you decide to go to Antarctica, then most likely you will arrive at this airport. Ice Runway works only in the summer months. Eyewitnesses say that this is rather a separate runway, covered with snow and ice, it is specially prepared by the beginning of the season.

Not far from the air harbor is the McMurdo station, and mostly landing aircraft at the airport bring researchers and cargo there.

Landing in the Ice Runway is completely safe until the snow blocks begin to melt - then the landing plane can get stuck or break the ice cake.

MADEIRA AIRPORT (MADEYRA, PORTUGAL)

Beautiful Portuguese island is known not only as the birthplace of football player Cristiano Ronaldo, but also for its difficult airport for landing Funchal.

Initially, there were two runways in the air harbor, each of which had a length of 1.6 km. However, after the plane crash, which killed 131 people, the authorities decided to extend the lane by 200 meters.

But this did not make the takeoff and landing much easier, so in 2000 at the airport one strip was completed - it is placed on 180 reinforced concrete pillars.

Futuristic construction of the runway is surrounded by a rich landscape: the airport is surrounded by mountains on one side, and the sea on the other. To maneuver here, pilots need a lot of skill.

PRINCESS JULIANA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (SEN-MARTEN Island)

The runway of the airport of Princess Juliana begins just outside the Maho beach: the planes come to the landing just a few dozen meters from the rest.

Depending on meteorological conditions, take-off and landing at the airport have a high or medium degree of complexity.

But due to its proximity to the beach, which is visited by many people, travelers believe that the airport of Princess Juliana is one of the most dangerous air harbors in the world.

COURCHEVEL AIRPORT (FRANCE)

In addition to ski resorts, Courchevel is known for the airport with an ultra-short runway, the length of which is only 525 meters.

COURCHEVEL AIRPORT (ФРАНЦИЯ)

The band is inclined at 18.5%. Because of the lack of an ILS system at the airport, it can not take the springs during the fog. By the way, they shot the scene of one of the films of the Bond movie "Tomorrow Never Dies".

SKIATOS AIRPORT (SKYATOS Island, GREECE)

Those who like to rest in Greece probably know this air harbor. Its runway is considered one of the shortest and most dangerous. The strip begins almost at sea, its end also goes into the water.

SKIATOS AIRPORT (Остров СКИАТОС, ГРЕЦИЯ)

For this reason, only certain types of aircraft with limited weight can land here. Fans of the extreme like watching the landing of aircraft at the airport - here you can hear a loud sound and feel the full power of this action. It happened that the air wave that comes from the airliner, overturned cars parked next to the runway.

NARSARSUAQ AIRPORT (GREENLAND Island)

If you dream to look at the fjords from above, fly to the airport Narsarsuak, located near the homonymous settlement in the southern part of Greenland.

Making a landing, aircraft fly over the fjord and unfold along the U-shaped track, so there is a strong "chatter". It is forbidden to make night flights to the airport.

GIBRALTAR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (GIBRALTAR)

The air harbor is one of the smallest in the world, but more is known for the fact that its runway literally crosses one of the largest local roads.

For this reason, the airport is considered one of the most dangerous in the world.

TONCONTIN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (HONDURAS)

The airport is an extremely sad story. In 1934, when he began his work, the aircraft were not as powerful as they are now, and could land on shorter strips. Today, aircraft often fall here in an accident.

The length of the Tonkotin runway is 2133 meters, it is in the valley and is surrounded by mountains. The airport is dangerous because there is only one take-off and one runway here.

At the same time, when flying, aircraft are forced to perform a complex "pin" to the left, so take-off and landing airliners can collide.

WELLINGTON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (NEW ZEALAND)

Arriving at this airport, it is necessary to fasten. Because of the channeling effect from the Cook Strait and the strong wind gusts that lead to the so-called "aerodynamic pickup", landing and take-off in the air harbor often go rigidly.

In addition, the airport runway is very short and is surrounded on both sides by the ocean coast.

JUANCHO E. YRAUSQUIN AIRPORT (SABA Island, CARIBBEAN NETHERLANDS)

At this airport, located on a small island that belongs to the Netherlands and is part of the group of Lesser Antilles, only the smallest aircraft can land.

The length of the runway of the air harbor is only 396 meters.
